Centering Description Examples

VF- - - - - - - - - -- -XF - - - - - - - - - Superb

Centering descriptions vary tremendously among stamp dealers. The above examples show what we consider to be Very Fine (VF), Extra Fine (XF), and Superb centering. F-VF centering, although not shown, is less well balanced than VF centering. The stamp design is closer to, but not touching, the perforations. We believe these descriptions are consistent with the descriptions contained in the Scott United States Specialized Catalogue. It is very tempting for some dealers to over-grade their stamps. Often times collectors think they are purchasing an XF stamp when in fact they are getting a VF or even an F-VF stamp. The truth becomes known when the collector attempts to sell a stamp and receives an F-VF price for his supposed XF stamp. We adhere to the policy of using the same descriptions in 'selling' our stamps as we do for 'buying'; so that if you decide to sell your stamps, you will know exactly what you have. One can call a piece of coal a diamond, but that does not make it so (even though they are both made of carbon). So don't believe every stamp description you see. Familiarize yourself with the information in the U.S. Scott Specialized Catalogue so you will know a VF or an XF stamp when you see it. We hope the illustrations used above will be of help.
